You may have already sensed it. A quiet pull inward. The nights drawing in. A feeling that something is ending, even if you can’t yet name what it is.

Many people know this weekend as Halloween. But beneath the costumes and the sweets sits something much older and more meaningful. It is called Samhain, and understanding the Samhain meaning can change how you experience this entire season.

The Origin of Halloween: Where Samhain Began

The origin of Halloween goes back over 2,000 years to the Celtic peoples of Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man. They celebrated Samhain (pronounced “sow-in”) as the end of the harvest and the beginning of the dark half of the year, gathering around bonfires to honour the season that was ending and to prepare for the winter ahead.

The Celts also believed that at this time of year the veil between the physical world and the spirit world became thin enough for the two to meet. Over the centuries, as these traditions blended with the Christian festival of All Hallows’ Eve, Samhain gradually became the Halloween we know today, and many of the old customs, such as lanterns, bonfires and dressing up, are still part of it.

Samhain Spiritual Meaning

Spiritually, Samhain is a time for honouring your ancestors, closing chapters and letting go of whatever you have outgrown, which is why many people think of it as the spiritual new year.

It’s a good moment to look at what has come to a natural end in your life, and at what you may still be holding on to out of habit, fear or loyalty to a version of yourself that no longer fits.

Samhain Energy: What You May Be Feeling Right Now

The Samhain energy, and the Halloween energy around it, can feel quite intense, especially if you are sensitive. When the veil is said to be thinner, emotions and memories that have been sitting in the background often rise to the surface. You might notice:

  • A stronger need for time alone

  • Heightened intuition or vivid dreams

  • Emotional sensitivity or unexpected tears

  • Memories of loved ones coming back to you

  • Tiredness as your body naturally slows down

  • A wish to let go of something

All of this is a normal response to the season, so try to go easy on yourself and allow a little more rest than usual.

Samhain Crystals: Crystals for Halloween Night

If you like working with crystals, these four are lovely to have beside you at this time of year, particularly if you tend to feel things more strongly when the energy shifts.

  • Black Tourmaline protects your energy field and keeps you grounded when emotions are running high.

  • Smoky Quartz gently releases heaviness and supports you in letting go of what you no longer need.

  • Amethyst calms the mind and strengthens your connection to your intuition and to spirit.

  • Labradorite shields you when you feel sensitive and supports your inner guidance.

For crystals for Halloween night, you can hold one in your hand while you sit quietly, or keep it in your pocket or beside your bed.

If you’re looking to add a new crystal to your collection this season, you can browse the ones I sell in my crystal shop, where every piece is chosen with energy work in mind.

A Simple Samhain Ritual You Can Do This Weekend

This is one of my favourite simple Samhain rituals because it takes only about 10 minutes and uses things you already have at home. It also works as a Halloween ritual for beginners, since there is no right or wrong way to do it.

All you need is a pen, some paper and a glass of water. A candle is nice if you have one, but a lamp works just as well.

1. Create your space. Dim the lights, put your phone on silent and sit somewhere comfortable. If you’re using a candle, light it now.

2. Ground yourself. Place one hand on your heart and one on your belly, then take three slow breaths while you imagine roots growing from your feet into the earth and holding you steady.

3. Honour those who came before you. Say out loud the names of loved ones who have passed, or of people who shaped who you are, and tell them “Thank you for what you gave me, I honour you.” Then sit quietly for a moment and notice what comes up.

4. Release what is complete. Write down three things you’re ready to let go of, such as a habit, a belief, a pattern in a relationship or a fear, and next to each one write “I release this with love.” Read them aloud and tear the paper into small pieces, or if you have a candle, burn it safely over the sink.

5. Cleanse. Hold your hands under running water for a minute, or hold the glass of water between your palms and imagine everything you’ve released washing away. Then pour the water somewhere in nature.

6. Welcome something new. On a clean piece of paper, write one line about what you would like to bring in as the light returns, and keep it somewhere you’ll see it.

7. Close. With your hand on your heart, say “I am safe, I am supported and I honour the turning of the year.” Then blow out your candle and take one last deep breath.

Afterwards you might feel lighter, emotional or simply quiet, and all of that is completely normal. Drink some water and give yourself time to rest.

Carrying Samhain Energy Into November

The days after Samhain are often when the release really settles in, so you may find yourself feeling tender, tired or unusually reflective for a little while. A few simple things can help you through it: keep your evenings quieter where you can, journal for a few minutes about anything the ritual brought up, and spend some time outside each day, even a short walk, to stay grounded while your energy adjusts.

If you’d like extra support, flower essences and Reiki are both gentle ways to work through this transition. Flower essences work with the emotional body, helping you process feelings that have come to the surface, find your balance again and feel more settled during times of change, while a Reiki session can help your body and nervous system release what you’ve been carrying. If any of this speaks to you, my services page explains how I work and what a session with me looks like, so you can see whether it feels like the right fit.
